How to use it
  1. Enter your household size and household annual income (MAGI).
  2. Enter the benchmark plan monthly premium β€” the 2nd-lowest-cost Silver plan in your area.
  3. Read your estimated monthly premium tax credit, net premium, and expected contribution.
Formula
Income as % of FPL = household income Γ· Federal Poverty Line for your household size Γ— 100. Expected annual contribution = income Γ— applicable percentage (a flat 2.10% below 133% FPL, ramping up to 9.96% at 300%-400% FPL). Monthly premium tax credit = benchmark premium βˆ’ (expected annual contribution Γ· 12), floored at $0.
Worked example

A household of 2 earning $60,000/year (about 284% of the Federal Poverty Level) with a $950/month benchmark Silver plan has an expected contribution around 9.46% of income β€” about $473/month β€” with the remaining roughly $477/month covered by the premium tax credit.

Interpreting your result

Uses the 2026 IRS applicable-percentage table (Rev. Proc. 2025-25) and the 2025-published HHS federal poverty guidelines β€” the guidelines that actually govern 2026 coverage-year eligibility. Above 400% FPL there's currently no subsidy at all β€” the enhanced subsidies from 2021-2025 expired at the end of 2025 and were not extended. This is a rough planning estimate, not an eligibility determination.

Recommendations
  • β€’ Your subsidy is based on the 2nd-lowest-cost Silver ('benchmark') plan in your area, not the plan you actually choose.
  • β€’ Because the credit is based on projected income, a raise or bonus during the year can mean owing some of it back at tax time.
  • β€’ Right at 400% FPL, small income changes matter enormously β€” crossing just above the cliff loses the entire credit.
