About the Canada TFSA Calculator

Tracks your cumulative Canadian Tax-Free Savings Account (TFSA) contribution room using the CRA's published annual dollar limits since the account's 2009 introduction, and projects tax-free investment growth from a planned annual contribution, capping it automatically at whatever room is actually available each year.

How to use it
  1. Enter the year you turned 18 (or 2009 if you were already 18+ then).
  2. Enter your lifetime contributions to date and any withdrawals made in prior years.
  3. Enter your current TFSA balance, planned annual contribution, years to project, and expected growth rate.
  4. Read your available contribution room now, and the projected tax-free balance.
Formula
Cumulative room = sum of the CRA's annual TFSA dollar limit for every year from your eligibility year through the current year. Available room now = cumulative room βˆ’ lifetime contributions + prior-year withdrawals. Each projected year adds that year's new limit to room, caps your planned contribution at whatever room remains, then compounds: balance = balance Γ— (1+g) + that year's actual contribution.
Worked example

Eligible since 2009, $40,000 contributed to date, $40,000 current balance, planning $7,000/yr for 20 years at 6% growth: $69,000 of room available now, growing to a projected balance of about $385,785 after 20 years.

Interpreting your result

Uses the CRA's confirmed published annual limits for 2009-2026; years beyond 2026 assume the current $7,000 limit as a flat placeholder. Withdrawals restore room only starting the calendar year AFTER the withdrawal, not immediately β€” recontributing in the same year you withdraw, if you've already used your room, is an over-contribution subject to a 1%-per-month CRA penalty tax, which this tool doesn't model. Not financial or tax advice.

Recommendations
  • β€’ Your available room is almost always more than just this year's limit β€” it's the sum of every year's limit since you turned 18 (or 2009), minus what you've actually contributed.
  • β€’ A TFSA withdrawal is not lost room β€” it comes back, but only starting next calendar year.
  • β€’ This tool projects a steady future contribution plan; it doesn't model additional withdrawals during the projection itself.
Frequently asked questions
$7,000 β€” unchanged from 2024 and 2025. The CRA indexes this annual dollar limit to inflation and rounds it to the nearest $500.
