About the Crypto Profit/Loss Calculator
Calculates realized profit or loss on a completed crypto trade — buy price and quantity against sell price, with exchange fees on both the buy and sell side netted in before comparing cost basis to proceeds.
- Enter the price you bought at and the quantity.
- Enter the price you sold at.
- Enter the exchange fee percentage charged on each side of the trade.
- Read your realized profit or loss and return on cost basis.
Buying 0.5 BTC at $40,000 (0.5% fee) costs $20,100 including the fee. Selling that 0.5 BTC at $50,000 (0.5% fee) nets $24,875 after the fee. Profit: $4,775, a 23.76% return on the $20,100 cost basis.
This calculates a single realized trade only — a full-position close where buy quantity equals sell quantity. It doesn't track cost-basis lots across multiple partial buys/sells (real portfolios often use FIFO, LIFO, or specific-lot identification, which can each produce a different taxable gain from the same trades), doesn't compute any tax owed (short- vs. long-term capital gains treatment varies by country and holding period), and has no live price feed. Not tax or financial advice.
- • Always include the exchange fee on both legs — ignoring fees can meaningfully overstate your real return, especially on smaller trades where the fee is a bigger share of the total.
- • This tool assumes you're closing the entire position bought — for a partial sell, run the numbers using only the quantity actually sold, not your full holding.
- • Keep your own trade records (date, price, quantity, fees) for tax reporting — this calculator doesn't save or export anything.
