How to use it
  1. Enter your gross annual income.
  2. Select an income-replacement ratio (50-70%, with 60% the common default).
  3. Select a premium-estimate tier reflecting occupation risk.
  4. Read your estimated monthly benefit, premium, and the income gap not covered.
Formula
Monthly benefit = gross annual income Γ— replacement ratio Γ· 12. Annual premium = gross annual income Γ— premium rate (1-3%, by tier). Monthly income gap = gross annual income Γ— (1 βˆ’ replacement ratio) Γ· 12.
Worked example

A $70,000 gross annual income, 60% replacement ratio, mid premium tier (2%): a $3,500/month benefit, an estimated $1,400/year premium.

Interpreting your result

This is an illustrative, directional estimate β€” not a real quote. Insurers deliberately cap LTD benefits below 100% of income (typically 60-70%) so returning to work stays financially preferable to remaining on claim.

Recommendations
  • β€’ A disability lasting more than 90 days is more common over a career than many people expect.
  • β€’ Check your employer's group LTD coverage first β€” an individual policy is often meant to supplement, not duplicate, that.
  • β€’ The 60-70% replacement range exists deliberately to keep returning to work financially attractive.
