About the Inflation Calculator
Converts a dollar amount from one year into its equivalent purchasing power in another year, by chaining a static table of historical US CPI-U annual inflation rates year over year.
- Enter the Starting amount.
- Enter the year that amount is denominated in.
- Enter the year you want the equivalent value for — this can be earlier or later than the starting year.
- If either year falls before 2005 or after 2025, adjust the Assumed annual rate used for those out-of-table years.
- Read the equivalent value, cumulative price change, and annualized rate in the result panel.
A $100 amount from 2010, re-priced into 2025 dollars: chaining each year's CPI-U rate from 2011 through 2025 gives a cumulative factor of about 1.4749 — an equivalent value of about $147.49, roughly +47.5% cumulative price change, or about 2.62% annualized.

This uses a static, sourced table of historical US CPI-U annual average inflation rates covering 2005–2025 — not a live feed from the Bureau of Labor Statistics. A browser-side tool has no practical way to authenticate against and rate-limit-manage the BLS API on every calculation, so the table is baked in with a defined cutoff year (2025). Any year requested outside that window — earlier history or a future projection — falls back to a plain assumed average annual rate that you control, clearly distinct from the sourced 2005–2025 figures. This is a purchasing-power re-pricing tool, not a wage-growth, investment-return, or economic-forecasting tool.
- • For any year before 2005 or after 2025, the result leans on your Assumed annual rate input rather than a sourced figure — treat that portion of the result as an illustrative estimate, not a historical fact or a forecast.
- • 2022's 8.0% CPI-U print was the highest annual rate in this table by a wide margin (the highest since 1981) — any calculation spanning 2022 will show a visibly sharper jump than neighboring years.
- • This only re-prices for the general price level — it says nothing about whether your income, savings, or investments actually kept pace with inflation over the same period.
