How to use it
  1. Enter the patio's length and width in feet.
  2. Enter the paver's width and length in inches.
  3. Adjust the waste factor for cuts around edges/curves.
  4. Enter your compacted base depth and bedding sand depth.
  5. Read the pavers, base material, and sand needed.
Formula
Patio area = length × width. Paver area (sq ft) = (paver width ÷ 12) × (paver length ÷ 12). Pavers needed = ceiling(area × (1 + waste %) ÷ paver area). Compacted base volume (cu yd) = area × (base depth ÷ 12) ÷ 27. Loose base to order = compacted volume ÷ 0.8. Bedding sand (cu yd) = area × (sand depth ÷ 12) ÷ 27.
Worked example

A 12ft × 10ft patio with 12x12in pavers, 10% waste, a 4in compacted base, and 1in bedding sand: 132 pavers, about 1.85 cubic yards of loose base material, and about 0.37 cubic yards of bedding sand.

Interpreting your result

Per ICPI guidance, a compacted crushed-stone base of at least 4in is recommended for pedestrian patios, 6-8in for driveways. Compacting shrinks volume by roughly 20%, so 'material to order' already accounts for that. Bedding sand is typically 1-1.5in thick. Doesn't size edge restraints, geotextile fabric, or polymeric joint sand.

  • Order the 'loose' base figure, not the compacted figure.
  • Compact base material in layers no more than about 4in thick at a time.
