How to use it
  1. Enter the cash price of what you're redeeming points for.
  2. Enter any taxes/fees you'd still pay in cash.
  3. Enter how many points or miles you used.
  4. Read the value per point and how it compares to typical benchmarks.
Formula
Value redeemed = cash price βˆ’ cash fees. Value per point (cents) = (value redeemed Γ· points used) Γ— 100.
Worked example

Redeeming 25,000 points for a $600 flight with $45 in cash fees: $555 of value redeemed, working out to 2.22 cents per point β€” an excellent redemption by the general benchmark.

Interpreting your result

'Good value' benchmarks vary meaningfully by loyalty program β€” a hotel program valued at 0.5 cents/point has a very different bar than one valued at 2 cents/point. This tool uses a general cross-program benchmark, not a program-specific one.

Recommendations
  • β€’ Always subtract cash fees/taxes from the cash price before dividing by points used.
  • β€’ Compare against your specific loyalty program's own published valuation.
  • β€’ A redemption clearing cash-back baseline (roughly 1 cent/point) is usually reasonable.
Frequently asked questions
Roughly 1.5-2+ cents per point is commonly considered good-to-excellent for major transferable points programs.
