About the Trade-In Value Estimator

How to use it
  1. Enter a private-party/retail value estimate as your baseline.
  2. Enter the vehicle's age and current mileage.
  3. Select its condition.
  4. Adjust the dealer trade-in discount % if you have a more specific figure.
  5. Read the estimated trade-in offer.
Formula
Expected mileage for age = age Γ— 12,000. Mileage adjustment % = βˆ’(actual βˆ’ expected) Γ· 1,000 Γ— 0.5%, clamped between βˆ’30% and +15%. Adjusted value = baseline Γ— (1 + mileage adjustment%) Γ— condition multiplier. Trade-in estimate = adjusted value Γ— (1 βˆ’ dealer discount %).
Worked example

An $18,000 private-party baseline for a 5-year-old car with 60,000 miles in good condition: an estimated trade-in offer of $15,300 at the default 15% dealer discount.

Interpreting your result

This is a rough estimate, not an appraisal. Dealers typically offer meaningfully less than private-party value β€” commonly cited at roughly 10-20% below.

Recommendations
  • β€’ Get multiple trade-in quotes before accepting a dealer's first offer.
  • β€’ Higher-than-average mileage is one of the biggest factors reducing trade-in value.
  • β€’ Selling privately typically nets more money, at the cost of time and effort.
Frequently asked questions
