About the Zakat Calculator
Calculates Zakat owed — 2.5% of Zakat-eligible wealth (cash, gold/silver, investments, and business inventory, minus short-term debts) — once that net wealth has met or exceeded the Nisab threshold, using either the gold or silver Nisab standard.
- Choose the Nisab standard — gold (87.48g) or silver (612.36g).
- Enter today's price per gram for that metal.
- Enter your cash, gold/silver value, investments, and business inventory.
- Enter any short-term debts you owe.
- Read your net Zakatable wealth and the Zakat due, if you meet the Nisab.
With $5,000 cash and no other assets or debts, using the silver Nisab at $0.95/gram: Nisab value is $581.74, and since $5,000 exceeds that, Zakat due is $125.
| Standard | Weight | Note |
|---|---|---|
| Gold | 87.48 grams (~7.5 tola) | Higher threshold — fewer people reach it |
| Silver | 612.36 grams (~52.5 tola) | Lower threshold — many contemporary scholars recommend this |
Zakat is due once net Zakatable wealth has remained at or above the Nisab threshold for one full lunar (Hijri) year, not the Gregorian calendar year. Specific fiqh rulings can vary by school of thought and individual scholarly opinion — consult a knowledgeable local imam or Islamic scholar for anything consequential.
- • The silver standard gives a meaningfully lower threshold than gold.
- • Business inventory means goods actually held for trade or resale at current market value.
- • Zakat is calculated on wealth held for a full lunar year.
