How to use it
  1. Enter your annual taxable income.
  2. Read your take-home pay, income tax, and Medicare levy in the result panel.
Formula
Income tax is computed progressively across 5 brackets: 0% up to $18,200, 15% up to $45,000, 30% up to $135,000, 37% up to $190,000, 45% above. The Medicare levy is a flat 2% of taxable income, phased in between roughly $28,011 and $35,013 for low-income earners. Take-home pay = income βˆ’ income tax βˆ’ Medicare levy.
Worked example

$80,000 taxable income: $0 on the first $18,200, 15% on the next $26,800 ($4,020), 30% on the remaining $35,000 ($10,500), for $14,520 income tax, plus the full 2% Medicare levy ($1,600) β€” leaving about $63,880 take-home pay, an effective rate of roughly 20.2%.

Interpreting your result

Uses 2026-27 resident tax brackets, including the 16%β†’15% second-bracket cut effective 1 July 2026. Assumes Australian tax residency and doesn't model HECS/HELP repayments, the Medicare Levy Surcharge, or the Low Income Tax Offset. Not tax advice.

Recommendations
  • β€’ The second-bracket rate dropped from 16% to 15% on 1 July 2026 β€” a further legislated cut to 14% is scheduled for 1 July 2027.
  • β€’ The Medicare levy is separate from private health insurance β€” even people with private cover generally still pay the 2% levy.
  • β€’ This tool doesn't include HECS/HELP repayments, an additional percentage of income above a separate threshold for anyone with an outstanding student loan balance.
Frequently asked questions
You pay no income tax on that portion, but the Medicare levy can still apply depending on your total income and the low-income thresholds.
