About the Auto Insurance Estimator

Gives a directional estimate of annual and monthly car insurance premiums from national-average base rates, adjusted by age, coverage level, vehicle type, driving record, and a broad state cost tier — not a real quote.

How to use it
  1. Enter your age and choose a coverage level (full or minimum/liability-only).
  2. Choose your vehicle type and driving record.
  3. Choose a broad state cost tier (not your exact state).
  4. Read the estimated annual and monthly premium.
Formula
Estimated premium = national-average base premium (by coverage level) × age multiplier × state-cost-tier multiplier × vehicle-type multiplier × driving-record multiplier.
Worked example

A 30-year-old with full coverage, a sedan, a clean driving record, in a national-average-cost state: roughly the $2,356 national-average full-coverage base premium, adjusted by a near-1.0 age multiplier at that age — about $2,356/year, or $196/month.

Interpreting your result

This is a directional, illustrative estimate built from national averages and a handful of broad adjustment factors — not a real quote. Real premiums come from an insurer's underwriting of your specific driving history, exact vehicle (VIN-level), credit-based insurance score (used in most states, though California, Hawaii, and Massachusetts ban the practice), annual mileage, and marital status. The vehicle-type multipliers are directional only — no single authoritative national table breaks down premiums by vehicle category — and the state figure is a broad cost tier anchored to the cheapest and most expensive states on average, not a lookup for your specific state.

Recommendations
  • Age has one of the largest effects — drivers under 20 pay roughly double the national average, while drivers in their 40s-50s often pay noticeably less.
  • A single at-fault accident or DUI can raise premiums by 50-90% under this model's multipliers — get quotes from multiple insurers after any change in your driving record, since insurers vary widely in how much they penalize the same incident.
  • This tool can't replace real quotes — always compare at least 3 real insurer quotes before choosing a policy, since underwriting varies significantly insurer to insurer.
Frequently asked questions
No — it's a directional, illustrative estimate from national averages and broad adjustment factors. Real premiums depend on your insurer's own underwriting of factors this tool can't model, like your exact vehicle and credit-based insurance score.
