How to use it

Formula
Men: BMR = 10×weight(kg) + 6.25×height(cm) − 5×age + 5 Women: BMR = 10×weight(kg) + 6.25×height(cm) − 5×age − 161
Worked example

30-year-old male, 80 kg, 180 cm → BMR = 800 + 1125 − 150 + 5 = 1,780 kcal/day. At a moderate activity level (×1.55), estimated TDEE ≈ 2,759 kcal/day.

Recommendations
  • BMR alone doesn't include any activity — it's the calories burned by organs and basic function at complete rest.
  • TDEE (BMR × activity multiplier) is the more useful number for daily calorie planning.
  • This is a population-average formula — true metabolic rate varies by body composition, genetics, and some medical conditions it can't capture.
Frequently asked questions
Mifflin-St Jeor (1990) has been shown in validation studies to predict resting energy expenditure more accurately on average than the older 1919 Harris-Benedict equation, and is the equation most current clinical/dietetic guidance recommends.
