How to use it
  1. Enter emails delivered (sent minus bounces), unique opens, and unique clicks for the campaign.
  2. Read open rate, CTR, and click-to-open rate (CTOR) in the result panel.
  3. Compare each rate against the typical-range benchmark bar below it.
Formula
Open rate = unique opens ÷ emails delivered × 100. Click-through rate (CTR) = unique clicks ÷ emails delivered × 100. Click-to-open rate (CTOR) = unique clicks ÷ unique opens × 100.
Worked example

10,000 emails delivered, 2,200 unique opens, and 260 unique clicks gives a 22% open rate (typical), a 2.6% CTR (right at the ~2.66% all-industry average), and an 11.82% click-to-open rate.

Interpreting your result

Benchmark bands are drawn from Mailchimp's published all-industry averages (open rate ~21.33%, CTR ~2.66%). Since Apple Mail Privacy Protection (2021) pre-fetches images for many subscribers, open-rate counts are inflated industry-wide — CTR and CTOR are generally considered more reliable engagement signals today.

Recommendations
  • CTOR isolates content/offer appeal from subject-line/deliverability performance.
  • Because Apple Mail Privacy Protection inflates opens for a large share of subscribers, track CTR and CTOR trends over time rather than fixating on open rate alone.
  • Compare rates within the same industry and list type.
Frequently asked questions
