About the Sales Commission Calculator

Calculates commission earned on a sale, supporting both a flat commission rate and a tiered/accelerator structure where a higher rate applies to the portion of a sale above a quota threshold.

How to use it
  1. Choose flat rate or tiered/accelerator structure.
  2. Enter the sale amount.
  3. For flat rate, enter the commission %. For tiered, enter the quota threshold, base rate, and accelerator rate.
  4. Read the commission earned and effective overall rate.
Formula
Flat: commission = sale amount Γ— rate %. Tiered: commission = min(sale, quota) Γ— base rate % + max(0, sale βˆ’ quota) Γ— accelerator rate %.
Worked example

A $50,000 sale with a $30,000 quota, 5% base rate, and 10% accelerator: $3,500 total commission β€” a 7% effective rate.

Interpreting your result

Real sales compensation plans vary widely β€” some apply accelerators retroactively to the whole sale, others cap total commission or claw it back on a cancelled deal. Check your actual comp plan.

Recommendations
  • β€’ An accelerator applying only to the portion above quota (as modeled here) is more common than one applying retroactively.
  • β€’ Effective rate is the easiest single number to compare across different deal sizes.
  • β€’ Watch for plan-specific caps or clawback clauses this calculator doesn't model.
Frequently asked questions
Flat pays the same rate on every dollar; tiered pays a higher rate above a quota threshold.
