About the Social Engagement Rate Calculator

Calculates social media engagement rate two ways — total engagements (likes + comments + shares) divided by follower count, or by reach/impressions — and benchmarks the result against typical per-platform ranges.

How to use it
  1. Enter likes/reactions, comments, and shares/reposts/saves for the post.
  2. Choose whether to calculate by follower count or by reach/impressions.
  3. Pick a platform to compare your rate against its typical benchmark range.
Formula
Total engagements = likes + comments + shares. Engagement rate (by followers) = total engagements ÷ follower count × 100. Engagement rate (by reach) = total engagements ÷ reach or impressions × 100.
Worked example

450 likes + 30 comments + 20 shares = 500 total engagements. Against 25,000 followers: a 2% engagement rate (by followers) — within Instagram's typical 1-3% range. Against 60,000 reach: a 0.83% engagement rate instead.

Interpreting your result

By-follower and by-reach engagement rate answer different questions and aren't interchangeable — by-reach is typically higher since not every follower sees every post. Platform benchmark bands are directional only: published averages vary widely by report, audience size, and content format.

Recommendations
  • Don't compare a by-reach rate on one post against a by-follower rate on another — pick one method and use it consistently.
  • TikTok and Instagram Reels/carousel formats typically post higher engagement rates than single-image posts.
  • Track your own rate over time as the most reliable benchmark.
Frequently asked questions
By-follower divides by your total audience size; by-reach divides by how many people actually saw the post, usually a smaller denominator, so the by-reach rate is usually higher.
