Formula

Lent runs 46 calendar days from Ash Wednesday through Holy Saturday. Fasting day count = calendar days elapsed since Ash Wednesday, minus the Sundays within that span (Sundays aren't fast days) — always exactly 40 total regardless of year, since Ash Wednesday is always a Wednesday and the 46-day span always contains exactly 6 Sundays.

Worked example

Ash Wednesday itself is fasting day 1 of 40; Holy Saturday (the day before Easter) is fasting day 40 of 40.

Real, disclosed variation: some individuals and traditions count all 46 calendar days without excluding Sundays.
