About the Vimshottari Dasha Calculator

Computes your Vimshottari Dasha — the classical 120-year planetary period timeline used in Vedic astrology — from your birth date, time, and location.

How to use it
  1. Enter your birth location (used to convert your local birth time to the correct instant).
  2. Enter your birth date and, as precisely as possible, your birth time.
  3. Read the currently running Mahadasha and Antardasha at the top.
  4. Tap any Mahadasha row in the timeline below to expand its own 9 Antardasha sub-periods.
Formula
Vimshottari Dasha assigns a fixed 120-year cycle across 9 planetary lords (Ketu 7, Venus 20, Sun 6, Moon 10, Mars 7, Rahu 18, Jupiter 16, Saturn 19, Mercury 17 years) in a fixed repeating order. Which lord's period is running at birth, and how much of it remains (the "balance"), depends only on the Moon's Nakshatra (lunar mansion) at birth — specifically, which of the 27 Nakshatras and how far through its 13°20' span the Moon has traveled. Each Mahadasha further subdivides into 9 Antardashas in the same 9-lord order, each proportional to (Mahadasha lord's years × Antardasha lord's years) ÷ 120.
Worked example

A Moon at exactly 5° into Rohini Nakshatra (Moon's own 10-year Dasha) has a balance of (13°20′ − 5°) ÷ 13°20′ × 10 = 6.25 years of Moon Dasha remaining from birth — matching the standard textbook balance formula exactly.

Interpreting your result

Computed from real sidereal Moon positions (Lahiri ayanamsa), the same astronomical foundation as this site's Panchang and Tithi calculators. Because the Moon moves roughly 13° per day, birth time accuracy genuinely matters — even an hour's uncertainty can shift the starting Dasha balance by weeks. This is a traditional astrological framework, not a scientific prediction system.

Recommendations
  • If you don't know your exact birth time, ask your family or check a birth certificate — even a 30-minute uncertainty can shift the Dasha balance by a week or more, since the Moon moves continuously through each Nakshatra.
  • The currently-running Mahadasha and Antardasha are highlighted automatically based on today's date — no need to search the timeline yourself.
Frequently asked questions
A traditional Vedic astrology system dividing a 120-year life cycle into periods (Dashas) ruled by 9 planets in a fixed order, used to time when different planetary influences are considered active in a person's life.
