The zodiac sign rising on the eastern horizon at the exact moment of birth — considered the most personal, birth-time-sensitive point in a chart, and the reference point houses are traditionally measured from.

Why does birth time matter so much for the Ascendant specifically?

The Ascendant moves through roughly one 30° sign every 2 hours as the Earth rotates — much faster than any planet's own orbital motion — so even a 10-15 minute birth-time error can matter near a sign boundary.

What's the difference between Rashi and Nakshatra?

Rashi is one of the 12 zodiac signs (30° each); Nakshatra is one of 27 lunar mansions (13°20' each) — two different, overlapping ways of dividing the same 360° zodiac, both shown here for each planet.

Why are Rahu and Ketu always exactly 180° apart?

Because they represent the two opposite points (ascending and descending) where the Moon's orbital plane crosses the ecliptic plane — by definition, a single line through Earth's center, so its two ends are always exactly opposite.

What is the Mean Node, and why not the True Node?

The Mean Node is a smoothed, real astronomical value (no short-term oscillation); the True Node includes an additional ~18.6-year periodic wobble on top of that mean motion. Both are real, legitimate methods used by different Vedic astrology software — this tool uses Mean Node, a standard, disclosed choice, not an error.

Does this show my houses (Bhavas)?

No — this tool computes the Ascendant and 9 planetary positions only. House placement (a full 12-house chart) is a further calculation this tool doesn't yet provide.

Is this the same as a "horoscope"?

This is the underlying birth chart (Kundali) that a horoscope reading is based on — this tool computes the chart's real planetary positions; it doesn't provide predictions or interpretation.

How accurate are these planetary positions?

Built on astronomy-engine, a VSOP87-based astronomical library accurate to about 1 arcminute — verified during development against real, independently-published 2026 planetary transit reports (Jupiter and Saturn's Rashi and Nakshatra both matched exactly).

What if I don't know my exact birth time?

Every Graha except the Ascendant moves slowly enough that a rough birth time (within an hour or so) is usually fine for Rashi-level accuracy; the Ascendant specifically needs a precise time — check a birth certificate or hospital record if possible.

Formula

The Ascendant is the tropical ecliptic longitude of the point where the ecliptic crosses the eastern horizon at your exact birth instant and location, computed via the standard formula tan(Asc) = -cos(RAMC)/(sin(ε)tan(φ)+cos(ε)sin(RAMC)) (RAMC = Local Sidereal Time, ε = obliquity of the ecliptic, φ = latitude). All planetary positions use real geocentric sidereal astronomy (Lahiri ayanamsa), the same foundation as this site's Panchang and Vimshottari Dasha calculators. Rahu and Ketu use the Mean Lunar Node (a standard low-precision polynomial, not the more complex "True Node" some software offers).

Worked example

A birth on 1 January 2026 (for illustration, not a real chart) places Jupiter at Mithuna (Gemini) 27.08°, in Punarvasu Nakshatra — matching real published 2026 transit reports for that date exactly.

Verified before shipping against two independent checks: (1) at the exact moment of sunrise, the Ascendant must physically equal the Sun's own ecliptic longitude — confirmed to within ~1° (matching the known refraction correction) at two test locations on different continents; (2) Jupiter and Saturn's computed sign/Nakshatra for a real test date matched independently-published 2026 transit reports exactly, down to the specific Nakshatra. This tool shows planetary positions only — not houses, aspects, strength (Shadbala), or an interpretive reading, which need a qualified astrologer.
