How is the D10 counting rule different from the Navamsa (D9)?

Navamsa uses a 3-way movable/fixed/dual counting scheme across 9 divisions; Dashamsha uses a simpler 2-way odd/even scheme across 10 divisions — odd signs count from themselves, even signs count from the 9th sign from themselves.

What does "Vargottama" mean?

When a planet falls in the same sign in both the main birth chart (D1) and a divisional chart (like D9 or D10), it's called Vargottama — traditionally considered a source of added strength for that planet.

Formula

Each 30° Rashi sign splits into 10 equal 3° divisions (dashamshas). Odd signs (Mesha, Mithuna, Simha, Tula, Dhanu, Kumbha) count their 10 divisions starting from themselves; even signs count starting from the 9th sign from themselves. Which of the 10 divisions a planet's exact degree falls into determines its D10 sign.

Worked example

A planet at 5° Taurus lands in Aquarius in the D10 chart (2nd division, counted from Capricorn, the 9th sign from Taurus).

Interpreting your result
